3t wins funding to develop skills in Teesside for utility sector’s shift to clean energy

Leading training provider Utility & Construction Training, part of 3t Training Services, has been awarded a government contract to deliver fully funded courses in Teesside which will develop the skills needed to fast track the utility industry’s transition to hydrogen.

3t’s Utilities Skills Bootcamps are open to anyone with a Tees Valley postcode and will cover all the essential skills needed for those starting out in the water and gas distribution industries. The three-week programmes, which will be delivered at 3t’s newly opened Teesside training centre, also include a guaranteed interview with an employer which could potentially lead to a full-time job at the end.

To achieve the government’s target of carbon net zero by 2050, the UK’s water and gas distribution networks need to be significantly upgraded to handle the change to hydrogen. But the utility sector suffers from well documented skills shortages and requires an influx of new talent to help deliver the government’s goal. 3t’s Utilities Skills Bootcamps will help to create a healthy pipeline of much-needed newly skilled workers.

The project will also help to support Teesside’s growing reputation as a leader in hydrogen innovation with projects such as bp’s H2Teesside, the Redcar Energy Centre, Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture, Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility and Tees Green Hydrogen already underway in the region.

3t is the UK’s largest training provider for safety-critical industries and works with some of the utility industry’s biggest names, from asset owners to supply chain businesses, to help raise industry standards and deliver compliance. 3t is also the only training provider offering apprenticeships to new utility industry entrants.

Martin Hottass from 3t said: “We are delighted to secure this funding, which will help to equip Teesside people with the much-needed skills to deliver the energy transition.

“The increasing number of hydrogen projects developing across Teesside is leading to significant demand for skilled workers in the gas distribution and water network sectors and our bootcamps will help to bridge skills gaps. They will also help to open up new career opportunities for those living and working throughout the Tees Valley area.

“Our role as a training provider is to ensure the industry has the next generation of workers, equipped with the skills, confidence, and qualifications to deliver the UK’s NetZero ambitions. By providing training for the Teesside market and working with businesses across the region, we aim to help Teesside cement its leading position and make a lasting impact on the UK’s energy transition.”

Phil Beach, Chief Executive at Energy & Utility Skills, said: “As an industry body, Energy &Utility Skills supports this approach to getting more new talent trained and working in the energy and utilities industries through quality assured courses.”
